Biography :Dr Peter Uchenna Nwangwu
(b. in 1950
) is a Nigerian -American
professor of Pharmacology, Toxicology
and Clinical Pharmacy,
executive assistant to the vice chancellor, University of Nigeria, Nsukka in which capacity he serves as the chief development officer of the university. Nwangwu has won many international awards
in the United States, including "2005 Ronald Reagan Gold Medal
" by the National Republican Congressional Committee; "2005 Man of the year
," by the American Biographical Institute; "Businessman of the year 2005,
" by the US Business Advisory Council, and "The 2006 Congressional Medal of Distinction
." He also serves as President and Chief Executive officer of the University of Nigeria Research and Economic Development (UNRED) foundation.
" Peter Nwangwu was born in Umuahia, Nigeria, to Igbo parents from Anambra State. He received his high-school education from the Anglican Grammar School, Umuahia, and Methodist College, Uzuakoli, where he became the pioneer recipient of the Best Student of the Year award in 1970. In January 1972, Nwangwu came to the United States for his college education at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. He placed out of many courses offered by various departments and was elected into the university’s honor roll beginning from his first year and later into the scholarly honor society Phi Eta Sigma. While in college, Nwangwu held several part-time jobs, including teaching assistant in biology, proctor of physics and laboratory research assistant in botany, and research assistant at the radiochemistry laboratory. The primary focus of his work in the radiochemistry lab was the use of neutron activation analysis for development of new analytical techniques for qualitative and quantitative measurement of trace elements in biological samples that employed nuclear reactors.
Nwangwu invented a screening methodology for anti-arrhymic drugs. The invention, which can identify drugs that can cure an irregular heartbeat, was created in 1976
as Nwangwu was studying for his dissertation.
, Nwangwu also invented a methodology for identifying the myocardial infection, also known as a heart attack. Both methodologies are being used across the world, he said. Nwangwu has also invented seven drugs used for correcting irregular heartbeats.
Nwangwu is the author of "Concepts and Strategies in New Drug Development." He is also the co-author of two other publications, "Essentials of Medical Pathology" and "Clinical Toxicity of Non Drugs."
