Biography :

Jodi Bieber born in 1967 is a South African photographer based in London. Her work takes a close look at the social wars within society. Though South Africa is her passion, her work has taken her to many other countries, including the rest of Africa, Iran, Iraq, and Pakistan.

She has won the 2011 World Press Photo of the Year for her portrait of an Afghan woman attacked by her husband. The World Press Photo Organization announced the winners of the 54th annual contest February 11 in Amsterdam.

Bieber’s close-up portrait shows 18-year-old Bibi Aisha, who tried to flee to her family home to escape her husband’s abuse. At the order of a Taliban commander, she was held down by her brother-in-law and her husband cut off Aisha’s ears and her nose. Aisha was rescued by aid workers and the US military and taken to a women’s refuge in Kabul. She now lives in the US. Bieber’s image of Aisha also won first place in the World Press Photo Portrait category.

She began her career by covering the period leading up to the first democratic elections in South Africa in 1994. After participating in the World Press Photo master class in 1996, her career expanded to the foreign media. She has also collaborated with several nonprofit organizations.

Bieber has received eight World Press Photo awards, a gold award at the Society of Publications Designers Awards for her work covering the Ebola crisis in Uganda, and a best cover design at the British Media Awards for her project on domestic violence in South Africa.

Her work has been included in many international group exhibitions, and she had her first solo exhibition at Visa Pour L'Image in Perpignon, France, in 2001. Her first book, Between Dogs and Wolves-Growing up with South Africa, which includes highlights from a decade of work in South Africa, was published in 2006

.Between Dogs and Wolves is the culmination of over ten years work by the award-winning South African photographer Jodi Bieber. Beginning in 1994 after South Africa’s first democratic elections, the book focuses on a generation of young people growing up on the fringes of South African society. Bieber takes us into one of the toughest neighbourhoods of Johannesburg, an area where gangs rule; into suburbs where prostitutes vary their rates depending on the colour of their clients; and shelters that are home to children living with HIV/Aids. We meet David, a 19-year-old living life on the edge, in the poor white neighbourhood of Fitas; but we also discover children training as dancers and musicians, as well as a father and son trapeze act – all have their dreams of escaping their reality.
